Case Studies

Case Study 1: Faux Run = Real Money
When the Rotary Club of Anderson, Ind. needed to organize a fund-raiser to fulfill its $15,000 pledge to Rotary International's Polio Plus campaign, Tom Bannon volunteered to chair an event committee.

"We needed to come up with an event that would raise money, obviously, but that also was sustainable, unique, and could be enjoyed by the various age groups that make up our club membership," said Bannon. "We also wanted to honor the memory of T. Franklin Miller, who was a long-time community and club leader, and was a champion of efforts to raise money for the Rotary Foundation and the Polio Plus campaign."

Case Study 2: The Clear Skies Project
How do you make replacing a leaking roof an appealing fund-raiser? You don't make it about the roof.

The Paramount Theatre in Anderson, Ind. is a well-deserved source of civic pride. Built in 1929, the Paramount had fallen into a severe state of disrepair and was slated for demolition in the early 1990's before a group of citizens came together to save the building and return it to its original grandeur.

The town rallied around the efforts to save the Paramount and the result is nothing less than breathtaking. From the grand ballroom to the theatre itself, the Paramount is a glorious aesthetic delight that excites the senses.

Case Study 3: The See-Through Wall
What do you do when you have a wall that needs to be about seven feet high on one side, but only about five feet high on the other? That was the problem facing Tom Bannon when he worked at Hoosier Park, a pari-mutuel horse racing facility in Anderson, Ind.

A chain link fence separated the track's apron area—the area where fans stand along the rail to watch the races—and the track surface. Patrons only wanted the fence to be about five feet high, as they wanted to look over it instead of through it. But the track surface was about two feet higher than the apron, so a fence that was five feet high on the apron side was only three feet high on the track side, and horsemen racing on the track needed it to be about five feet high on their side too.

Case Study 4: Re-evaluating Employee Evaluation
Working in a team environment is something Tom Bannon enjoys immensely. In 2004, he got an opportunity to work on a team project for Churchill Downs Incorporated (CDI) that was very challenging and rewarding.

CDI implemented four task forces to evaluate different aspects of its company. At the time, CDI owned six racetracks around the United States: Churchill Downs in Louisville, Ky., Arlington Park in Arlington Heights, Ill., Calder Racecourse in Miami, Hollywood Park in Los Angeles, Ellis Park in Henderson, Ky. and Hoosier Park in Anderson, Ind. Each task force had a representative from one of the six tracks.

"While with Borshoff I worked with Tom Bannon on the Hoosier Park Casino groundbreaking. It was a pleasure to do so because he had great ideas, was organized and truly took the ball and ran with it. It was obvious he had great relationships with fellow employees, the media and the VIPs who were involved."

"I had the distinct pleasure to work with Tom Bannon for nearly 7 years when he was with Hoosier Park and I was with Caldwell VanRiper/MARC USA. I handled all the Indianapolis-area public relations for Hoosier Park and Tom was my client contact. In all my dealings with Tom, I found him to be extremely professional, supportive and very understanding of the client-agency relationship. Tom is an outstanding supervisor for his staff, very 'media-savvy' and the type of person who is competent and comfortable in any situation."
